Dino Zoff became a symbol of Italian football not by being spectacular, but by making the extraordinary look normal.
Born in Mariano del Friuli on 28 February 1942, Zoff grew into one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the game. His early career took him through Udinese, Mantova and Napoli before he joined Juventus in 1972. There, his calmness, positioning and extraordinary reliability became the foundation of a remarkable eleven-year period.
Zoff was never a goalkeeper built on theatrical dives or dramatic gestures. He preferred economy. He stood correctly, read the flight of the ball and made saves with an authority that reassured everyone in front of him. At Juventus he won six Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies and the 1977 UEFA Cup. He also produced a run of 330 consecutive league appearances for the club, an astonishing measure of consistency.
His relationship with the Italian national team began in unforgettable fashion. Zoff made his senior debut during the 1968 European Championship and helped Italy win the tournament. Between 1972 and 1974 he then went 1,142 minutes without conceding an international goal, setting a record that became part of football history.
But the defining chapter came much later.
At the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Zoff was forty years old and captain of Italy. The team began slowly, then transformed during the second phase of the tournament. In the famous 3-2 victory over Brazil, Zoff made a crucial late save on the goal line to protect Italy's lead. Days later, the Azzurri defeated West Germany 3-1 in the final in Madrid. Zoff lifted the World Cup as captain and became the oldest player ever to win the tournament.
He ended his international career with 112 appearances and retired from playing in 1983. Yet his football story continued from the bench. As a coach he won the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup with Juventus and later led Italy to the final of Euro 2000, where the Azzurri were seconds away from victory before France turned the match around.
Zoff's greatness has always been linked to restraint: few words, little drama, total concentration. In a sport that often celebrates noise, he became immortal through composure.
